A striking recruitment poster for the Freikorps, the right-wing paramilitary formations that emerged from Germany's defeat in the First World War and were used to crush communist movements in the turmoil of the early Weimar Republic.The Freiwilliges Landesjägerkorps was formed in December 1918 from the 214th Infanterie-Division by General Georg Ludwig Rudolf Maercker. It was the first Freikorps unit to be officially recognized by the government.The poster urges ex-soldiers to enlist to preserve "peace and order in the Fatherland", safeguard property, support the government against the Spartakusbund, protect the National Assembly, and ensure the security of Germany's borders. "Everyone who has the welfare of our country, and the security of its borders at heart, join our ranks - musicians bring your instruments". In January 1919, the unit played a central role in suppressing the Spartacist uprising in Berlin. It then relocated to Weimar to protect the National Assembly. It was absorbed into the provisional Reichswehr in May 1919.
