First edition of Gleig's important account of the key part played by "Fighting Bob" Sale's brigade during the First Afghan War, particularly his successful defence of Jalalabad, a rare triumph during that disastrous campaign. Gleig drew on the manuscript journals of officers of the 13th Foot (Somerset Light Infantry), following a chance encounter "at the sea-bathing quarter of Walmer" (p. v).Gleig (1796-1888), chaplain to the armed forces, had served in the Peninsular War and the War of 1812, and was a prolific writer of non-fiction and fiction alike.
