The Relief of Chitral. Early reprint published two years after the first, of this popular account, which quickly went through several printings. The Younghusbands were brothers who served in different capacities on the Chitral Relief Force, George was part of the Force, whilst Frank, who had been political agent at Chitral (1893-4), covered the campaign as special correspondent for the Times. A successful colonial administrator, geographer, and a dabbler in mysticism, Frank has since been re-evaluated as "a fascinating embodiment of the contradictions and eccentricities of the imperial age" (ODNB). In their preface the brothers note that the photographs used were taken by a Sergeant Mayo of the Photographic Section of the Bengal Sappers and Miners, and the sketches supplied by Surgeon-Captain Browning-Smith and Lieutenant Beynon, the latter publishing his own account of the expedition under the title With Kelly to Chitral (1896). It should be mentioned that the two excellent perspective reconnaissance sketch maps, of Chokalwat and Nisa Gol, showing dispositions and lines of attack, give a fine impression of the extremely difficult terrain.
