Indian Frontier Policy: An Historical Sketch. First edition, commercially elusive. This is Adye's principal contribution to the public controversy over Russian expansion towards India and British relations with Afghanistan, the Great Game, in which he took a position that opposed the "Forward Policy", "minimized the Russian threat, and advocated the conciliation of Afghanistan while opposing frontier changes" (ODNB).After attending the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, General Sir John Miller Adye (1819-1900) had a distinguished career, serving with the Royal Artillery in the Crimean War, the Indian Rebellion, and the Ambela Campaign (1863); he was chief-of-staff to Wolseley in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the author of several books, including an autobiography. In Indian Frontier Policy he describes the causes and events of the first two Afghan wars and British actions since the close of the latter, including the Chitral campaign of 1895.
