Hodson's Horse 1857-1922. First edition. "A magnificent history - well written, authoritative, and finely produced. It contains good accounts of service during the Mutiny, the Second Afghan War, and WW1 (the Western Front, Palestine, Mesopotamia). The book is not only the primary source of reference for Hodson's Horse, it is also one of the best of all Indian Army histories" (Perkins).Previously owned by Brigadier Laurence Edward Lockhart Maxwell (1901-1974), who served with Hodson's Horse from 1922 to 1925, with his armorial bookplate, and inscribed on the front free endpaper: "L. E. L. Maxwell from C. M. M., 1928"; possibly the gift of his mother Clarine Mignonette Maxwell (1873-1955). He is listed by Gautam Sharma as the author of the otherwise unfindable Regimental History - Hodson's Horse (Meerut: Wellington Press, 1939). The Imperial War Museum holds his five-volume journal covering the years 1920 to 1941, a photograph album from his service in Waziristan in the 1920s, game book, and wartime notebooks. His father, William Lockhart Maxwell (1862-1914), commanding officer of Hodson's Horse from 1911 until his death, is given a brief biography by Cardew at p. 362.
