Bingley (1865-1944) was commissioned into the Leinster Regiment in 1885 then transferred two years later. He retired with the rank of lieutenant-general in 1921.This copy contains the bookplate of the Allahabad-based legal advocate Pandit Sir Sundar Lal (1857-1918), a highly respected lawyer known for his mastery of Irish, American, Indian, English, Hindu, and Islamic jurisprudence. Lal first entered the Allahabad High Court in 1881 and by 1892 had climbed to the top of the profession. "In the years that followed his name was a household word among the litigant public... There was scarcely a case of note in the High Court in which his services were not eagerly sought for by one party or the other" (Hasan, p. 371).
