Lady Login's Recollections. Court Life and Camp Life, 1820-1904. First edition, second issue, with a cancel title page. Login (1820-1904) brought the deposed Maharaja Duleep Singh to England in 1854, oversaw his education, and also took charge of Queen Victoria's goddaughter, Princess Gouramma of Coorg. This is an important work of Sikh historiography and record of life in British India.Login married Dr John Login in Lucknow in 1842. "Learning the court language, she was readily accepted into the zenanas of the royal family and other nawabs... From within the zenana she was able to assist in the medical diagnoses of her husband, who was barred from a physical examination of his female patients, and in subsequent treatment. Dr Login also had political duties, and his wife, aware of the power exercised by the ladies of the zenana, was able to help him in an area otherwise closed to him" (ODNB).Compiled from Lena Login's journals by her daughter, Lady Login's Recollections was published in 1916 by Smith, Elder & Co. Following its purchase of Smith, Elder in 1917, John Murray issued remaining copies with a cancel title page (which describes this second issue as a "second edition") and in a binding of light blue cloth, compared to the dark blue cloth of the first issue.
