Revolt in the Desert. First trade edition, first impression, of Lawrence's abridgement of Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1926). "Lawrence felt that in Seven Pillars he had failed to create a work of the 'titanic' class: his aim in the abridgement was more modest and therefore more attainable. There was magnificent material in Seven Pillars for an uncomplicated adventure story, and Lawrence was determined to succeed" (Wilson, p. 768).Revolt also represented a way for Lawrence to recoup the high financial cost of producing Seven Pillars. Published in March 1927, the abridgement went through five impressions in four months. The fifth was the last, Lawrence having raised enough money and Cape having made a small fortune.
