This was the copy of the British Foreign Office (with their library and withdrawal stamps), for whom the Treaty was a major geopolitical blow, threatening their defeat in the war.Lenin ceded vast territories, nearly a third of the Russian Empire. The sacrifice allowed him to consolidate the revolution and defeat the remaining Tsarist forces. Peace in the east enabled Germany to launch its full force westward in a spring offensive that achieved dramatic gains before ultimate failure. At Versailles, the harshness of Brest-Litovsk undermined German hopes of clemency. In the post-war settlement, several of the ceded territories emerged as independent states.The Foreign Office library was dispersed in the 1990s.
