RNWAR Wireless Signalling Instructions. A handbook for the Royal Naval Wireless Auxiliary Reserve, a group of amateur radio operators active the in years before the Second World War. It outlines signalling procedures, codes, and the appropriate responses to a variety of messages. We have traced only two institutional copies, at the IWM and the Caird Library of the National Maritime Museum.The RNWAR were formed in 1932 by the Admiralty "to provide a reserve of operators trained in Naval procedure, for Naval Service afloat or ashore in war or emergency" (Kidd, p. 1). The membership was made up of civilian amateurs who owned personal transmitting sets. They met at training centres across Britain, had their own uniforms, and instituted an internal rank system. In 1935 approximately 200 members were able to be embarked for the Fleet Review. In 1938 they were replaced by the RNV(W)R, a branch of the Volunteer Reserve force, and formerly subsumed into the armed forces.
