Britain's Civilian Volunteers. First Canadian edition, following the British edition published earlier the same year under the title The Story of British V.A.D. Work in the Great War. It was "the first attempt to put forward the story of the valuable work carried out by VADs and still remains the classic account" (Pugh, p. i). Ida Thekla Bowser (1874-1919) was a British writer and journalist. She became a member of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in England in around 1903. When the First World War broke out, she served as an honorary nurse initially in England and then in France as the commandant of a first aid post at a railway station.Provenance: from the collection of the suffrage historian Elizabeth Crawford.
