First edition, presentation copy from the author to the publisher, inscribed on the half-title verso: "To Mr Ernest Benn, 26 April 28, Emil Ludwig", and inscribed underneath, "With greetings from the translators, May Day, 1928, Eden Paul, Cedar Paul".Ludwig's popular biography of Jesus as a "real and intensely human figure" (author's note) was first published in German earlier that year year. Like his other biographical works, it blends documentary sources with psychological and literary reconstruction. The Pauls, husband and wife, translated several of Ludwig's works.
