Pentecost. A vibrant Pentecost scene from a Netherlandish Book of Hours. At the center, the Virgin Mary is seated in a deep blue mantle, while the Apostles gather around her as the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove from above. An owl is nestled in the lower margin of the border.Ornate borders with scrolling foliage, naturalistic flora and fauna, and architectural interiors are typical of Southern Netherlandish and Flemish illumination from the late 15th and early 16th century. The style and composition is reminiscent of works by artists of the Utrecht school (see, for example, Walters Ms. W.182) or active in Bruges (see Walters Ms. W.183 and 184).Provenance: Stephen C. Massey.
