University Education: Or, An Explication and Amendment of the Statute, First edition of this manifesto for university reform, a testament to fierce inter-collegiate squabbles in early 18th-century Oxford. Richard Newton (1676-1753) spent the latter part of his career fighting to expand and reform Hart Hall in Oxford, envisaging a collegiate structure which actively sought to mould its pupils - mentally and morally. As he made clear in the preface, Newton's vision encompassed "piety, learning, and good manners" (p. [xvi]).The plan ran into opposition from several other colleges, which coveted Hart Hall's lands and pupils.
