Kalidassa (Second Series). First edition, inscribed by Mirra Alfassa ("The Mother") on the front free endpaper, "To Eléonore, with blessings, M.A." The recipient, Eleanore Montgomery, was an early American follower of Aurobindo and established the Sri Aurobindo International Center Foundation to fundraise for the Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry.Following Aurobindo's death in 1950, Alfassa took over leadership of the ashram, receiving prominent visitors, including Nehru and Indira Gandhi. Montgomery, a fashion editor at Vogue, first visited Pondicherry in the early 1950s and set up the foundation at Alfassa's request. This work was compiled from manuscripts Aurobindo composed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the editors intending it to be a path "to a fuller study of Sri Aurobindo's approach to the Poet and his Age" (preface).
