A remarkable series of case studies illustrated with photographs, many provided by Dr. Alphonse Bertillon of anthropometry fame, and Valentin Magnan of St. Anne's, Paris, and which Winslow explains, "... are sad, as illustrating fallen humanity; [but] they are instructive, as actually depicting the very types which it is my intention to describe".The son of Forbes Benignus Winslow, expert on insanity and the law and operator of a number of private madhouses, Winslow (1844-1913) took over the running of his father's asylums on his death. He later turned his attention to the solving of crimes "by Sherlock Holmesian methods." His persistence in putting forward G. Wentworth Smith, a Canadian, as a suspect for Jack the Ripper, led to police briefly suspecting him for the murders. He was the author of a number of works on insanity including Mad Humanity, and the Handbook for Attendants on the Insane.Contemporary gift inscription to the front pastedown, "With compliments to Mr Bensusan from F. C. Heath". Bensusan was most likely London-trained, Johannesburg-based Arthur Daniel Bensusan (1869-1949) sometime senior lecturer in clinical medicine at the University of Witwatersrand, saw service on the 1896 Bechuanaland Expedition, and as a civilian surgeon in the Second Anglo-Boer War.
