Nihon shoki ("The Chronicles of Japan"), An 18th-century edition of the first two chapters of the Nihon shoki, covering the mythological origins of Japan and its rulers. This edition was edited by Nashinoki no Sukeyuki, a disciple of the philosopher Yamazaki Ansai and the author of multiple commentaries on this famous text.The Nihon shoki was completed in 720 under the supervision of Prince Toneri (676-735), making it the second oldest surviving history of Japan. The opening two chapters detail from when Izanagi and Izanami created the islands through to the reign of the first emperor, Jinmu, a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu.Provenance: Ohya Shobo Ltd, April 2006 - Martin Schøyen (b. 1940), the Norwegian collector of rare books and manuscripts.
