Information Pamphlet on Peiping (Peking). A rare guide to Beijing for American soldiers stationed in the capital at the conclusion of the Second World War, issued by the National Military Council, the organ of Chiang Kai-Shek's Kuomintang government responsible for directing the Chinese war effort and catering to the needs of foreign troops.Besides recommending the familiar tourist spots, this publication includes a five-page list of recommended eateries with suggestions for dishes in English and Chinese. In keeping with the fraught economic situation of the time, the covers have been printed on binder's waste.Although we have not been able to trace this guide in institutional collections, we have identified a copy of another version, also dated 1945 and with variant wrappers, at Stanford. A second edition was issued in 1946 and is clearly stated as such on the front wrapper.
