Lights and Shadows of Chinese Life. First edition, first printing, in the scarce green cloth variant binding, of this introduction to Chinese life by one of the founders of the Heavenly Foot Society, the first organization formed to oppose foot-binding.The author (1835-1922), a British missionary and a member of the London Missionary Society, first travelled to China in 1860 and spent the next 50 years travelling and living in the country. He wrote multiple works based on these experiences, and also published a dictionary of the Amoy dialect.Copies of Lights and Shadows were also bound in tan cloth. While there is no discernible priority between the two variants, copies in tan cloth are the more common in commerce.
