In the 1970s, the colonial government presided over an economic explosion founded on export-led industrialization, as well as the property, banking, and gambling sectors.José Maria Braga's (1897-1988) official handbook, first published in 1963, showcases a thriving East Asian entrepôt. A prominent businessman, Braga was also an old Macao hand. His ancestors had emigrated from Portugal to East Asia in 1712 and, after a brief spell working for the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, he moved to Macao in 1922. There, he helped establish the colony's first daily newspaper, while also amassing an impressive library of books and manuscripts on the region.
