A large archive of material sent by Al Purdy to Alan Abrams from the 1970s to the early 1980s consisting of over 175 pieces including over 150 SIGNED letters--nearly all typed, several with more than one page, and most envelopes present, 6 SIGNED hand-written postcards, 25 SIGNED typed poems, 3 SIGNED copies of book reviews, a SIGNED interview, and SIGNED documents relating to the incorporation of the Dalloway Press Limited. Subject matter is varied with a concentration on book collecting, their work, and other writers including Charles Bukowski, Irving Layton, Margaret Atwood, Norman Mailer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Denise Levertov, and others. A couple of excerpts: "I've been through this contract biz so often in the past, I know I know-- Jesus publishers! Hangem up by by their uncircumsised foreskins like the Indian sundance; trouble is many are Jewish and don't have foreskins" (2 August 1983) and "No, migawd a movie on Buk? Gazzara is too handsome for Buk tho. He (Buk) is like a water buffalo with smallpox in phsyiognomy" (22 or 23 September 1983). Al Purdy is often referred to as English Canada's "unofficial poet laureate" and Canada's Charles Bukowski. He published 39 books of poetry over a period of over 50 years. Alan Abrams is an American-born poet, editor, and "bootleg architect" who spent a portion of his career working in Canada.
