Mao zhuxi yulu ("Quotations from Chairman Mao"). A rare 351-page experimental anthology of Mao's quotations, published by the Political Department of the Shenyang Military Region Air Force almost half a year before the familiar first edition of the "Little Red Book". Divided into five sections, each with multiple subsections, the text presents a less decontextualized portrayal of Mao Zedong Thought than its more famous successor.The 351-page examples, which were issued only in small quantities for internal use and are today very difficult to locate, are the unassuming genesis of a worldwide publishing phenomenon. They were the culmination of a multi-year process of distilling and promoting Mao's key sayings, which began with the editorial staff of the influential newspaper Liberation Army Daily (Jiefangjun bao). From May 1961 onward, editors of the newspaper selected a Mao quote relevant to the day's news for inclusion at the top-right of the front page. Readers, who were mostly soldiers with a low level of education, related more readily to the quotations than to Mao's full essays, and this publication practice evolved into the printing of bound collections of various lengths and, eventually, the mass dissemination (from May 1964) of the 30-chapter, 250-page compilation edited by the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army.The experimental anthologies are found bound in wrappers, cloth, or vinyl.
