First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper to Popper's friend, the philosophical broadcaster Bryan Magee, "For Bryan: my first and my last book, with love from Karl. (But more is on the way)". A loosely inserted slip adds "Dear Bryan, if you have time, look at pp XVI to XXI. Love K". By the 1970s, Popper and Magee (1930-2019) were friends and intellectual allies. Popper appeared twice on Magee's 1970 radio series Conversations with Philosophers, and in 1973 Magee wrote a laudatory book-length study of Popper's thought: one of the earliest such studies of Popper. In his 1998 memoirs, Magee judged Popper "the foremost philosopher of the age" (p. 246). On page xvii of the present copy, Magee has made one correction, although presumably not exactly what Popper had in mind - he has corrected "Wirtschaft" ("economy") to "Wissenschaft" ("science").The Beiden Grundprobleme der Erkenntnistheorie, which translates as The Two Fundamental Problems of Epistemology, was originally written in 1930 as the first part of a two-volume work. The Grundprobleme was rejected as too long, but the second part was published in 1934 and later translated into English as The Logic of Scientific Discovery.
