La Guerre de la Péninsule sous son Véritable Point de Vue ou Lettre a Mr L'Abbé F*** sur L'Histoire de la Dernière Guerre; Publiée Dernièrement a Florence. First edition of this history of the Peninsular War, by a prominent diplomat and politician. Funchal (1760-1833) represented Portugal across Europe in the early 19th century and orchestrated the transfer of the royal court to Brazil in 1807. The work includes a chronological table of notable events in Europe from 1803 to 1814. Provenance: Hugh Cecil Lowther (1857-1944), 5th Earl of Lonsdale, with his name gilt-stamped on the boards and his armorial bookplate. Lowther was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel in 1897 and fought in the Second Boer War as assistant adjutant-general for the Imperial Yeomanry, but is best known as a sportsman, commonly called "England's greatest sporting gentleman". He was the first president of the National Sporting Club, a director of Arsenal Football Club, and vice-president of the RSPCA. Additionally there is an earlier manuscript "L" on the title page, possibly referring to William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844).
