Edition. A true first. FIRST EDITION is stated on the copyright page and the number line reads 24689753. Both points present. Not one of the many reprints and tie-in editions issued after 2020. Condition. Book near fine. Clean and tight, no previous ownership marks, no inscriptions, no underlining or marginalia. Dust jacket very good, unclipped, with light edge wear including a small nick at the head and faint spotting to the panels. Photographed in detail above. About this book. Tevis died in August 1984, roughly a year after publication. Three of his six novels had already become major films: The Hustler, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and The Color of Money. He never saw this one adapted, and the reason is a small piece of publishing history. Screen rights were bought in 1983 and the project was abandoned when he died. Allan Scott acquired them in 1992 and spent nearly three decades trying to get a version made, with Michael Apted and Bernardo Bertolucci attached at different points. In 2007 Heath Ledger intended it as his directorial debut, with Elliot Page to play Beth Harmon, and died in January 2008. Scott finally co-created the Netflix limited series that arrived in 2020. Tevis told the New York Times in 1983 that the novel was "a tribute to brainy women." The epigraph is Yeats's "Long-Legged Fly," acknowledged on the copyright page.
