The Seven Cities of Delhi follows the city through its successive capitals, from the early Rajput and Sultanate sites to Shahjahanabad.Colonel Sir Gordon Risley Hearn (1871-1953) was a British military engineer, railway specialist, and writer on India. Hearn wrote the book while serving in India with the Royal Engineers. He prepared the maps, took most of the photographs, and drew on information supplied by Delhi residents and veterans of 1857. His later career in Indian railway engineering included work on the Khyber Railway and service with the Eastern Bengal Railway.
