Medical Jurisprudence and Toxicology. Presentation copy, inscribed by the editor on the front pastedown, "To Erle Stanley Gardner. With grateful appreciation of his sustained kindnesses. John Glaister. 17 February 1953". An author of detective novels, Gardner based his most famous character, Perry Mason, on Glaister (1892-1971). This copy is from the crime library of Patricia Cornwell.Originally published in 1902 by the editor's father, John Glaister (1856-1932), this "was the first British textbook to use photographic evidence to illustrate violent death and other aspects of forensic medicine, each further edition amplified by his latest cases. In court his textbook was often quoted back at him by defence counsels" (ODNB). Gardner drew heavily on the textbook while writing his novels and his 1964 The Case of Horrified Heirs was dedicated to the younger Glaister.
