On Obscure Diseases of the Brain and Mind. Later edition, by the "pioneer of humane treatment in insane asylums and a prime mover in the establishment of the insanity plea in criminal defence" (Norman). This copy was owned and annotated by Henry Hutchinson (1856-1945), superintendent of Dixmont psychiatric hospital. Dixmont was founded by the mental health campaigner Dorothea Lynde Dix who advocated humane treatment of the mentally ill. Hutchinson's ownership signatures dated 1878 are on the first blank and title page. After his death, the copy was incorporated into the hospital's medical library; it has its blind and ink stamps on the endpapers, edges, and contents, the shelf label partially removed from the spine, and a ticket pocket and issue slip affixed to the front free endpapers.First published in 1860, On Obscure Diseases was considered Winslow's (1810-1874) magnum opus. "Passing rapidly into four editions, this work was recommended by the medical press as the standard textbook on the subject" (ODNB). This is the second US edition, based on the third and revised British edition.
