The Great Scourge and How to End It. First edition, with the gift inscription of suffragette Janie Terrero to her husband Manuel on the front pastedown: "Xmas 1913 from Janie". Originally published as a series of articles in The Suffragette, The Great Scourge is both an attack on sexual double standards and hypocrisy, and a vital text in the history of sexual health communication. In her introduction, Pankhurst states that "The Hidden Scourge is sexual disease" (p. v) and that "The cure, briefly stated, is Votes for Women and Chastity for Men" (p. vii). Reviews of the text from The Suffragette, The Times, and the Labour Leader are pasted in at the front and rear. Janie Terrero (1858-1944) first became a suffragist at the age of 18. She participated in the WSPU's militant campaign, for which she was imprisoned and force-fed. She married Máximo Manuel Terrero, the son of Argentine political activist Manuela Rosas, in 1885. Terrero bequeathed 2000 books to the Working Men's College after his death in 1926; The Great Scourge bears his donation gift plate.
