A Botanical Arrangement of all the Vegetables Naturally Growing in Great Britain. First edition of the standard botany text of the period and the first English flora to be based on Linnean taxonomy. Withering was a physician and botanist best known for his discovery of the medicinal properties of the foxglove plant.As a result of its great popularity, A Botanical Arrangement went through several editions and revisions, with the 14th and final edition published in 1877. For promoting the works of Linnaeus, Withering (1741-1799) was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society. The genus Witheringia solanacea was named after him. The book sustained the societal acceptance of botany as a suitable hobby for women by omitting Linnaeus's sexual system of plant classification.
