"Woodhouse was one of the first in Britain to embrace the newer influences in the teaching of mathematics developed on the continent. He strongly encouraged the study of mathematical analysis in contrast with the by that time out of date work of Newton" (Tomash & Williams).In 1820, Woodhouse (1773-1827) was awarded the prestigious chair of Lucasian professor of mathematics. His students included Charles Babbage and George Peacock, who went on to establish Woodhouse's mathematical systems within the discipline.
