He strongly encouraged the study of mathematical analysis in contrast with the by that time out of date work of Newton" (Tomash & Williams).In 1820, Woodhouse (1773-1827) was awarded the prestigious chair of Lucasian professor of mathematics. His students included Charles Babbage and George Peacock, who went on to establish Woodhouse's mathematical systems within the discipline.
