In total, they journeyed over 6,300 miles.Etherton (1879-1963) was a British army officer and, in the opinion of Peter Hopkirk, "a formidable individual" (p. 99). Prior to the expedition, he served as the British Consul-General in Chinese Turkestan and a judge of Britain's supreme court in China. His co-traveller (1882-1969) directed the touring departments of the Automobile Association.
