Second printing, illustrated with appealing maps and plans and focusing on the period from the arrival of European traders in the 17th century to the end of the 19th century. The compiler was a member of Bengal's provincial civil service and the Royal Agricultural College. For the 1901 census, he served as an assistant census officer.A chronological history across several chapters is followed by thematic discussions of population and revenue, municipal affairs, sanitation, buildings, streets, and the port. Appendices provide data on imports and exports, as well as the founding articles of the Bank of Bengal, established in 1809. According to the printer's slug, this was one of 240 copies printed in October 1902. We have traced an earlier printing of 360 copies, which was issued in August 1902.
