Criminal Life: Reminiscences of Forty-Two Years as a Police Officer. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "With the author's compliments. James Bent." Bent (1828-1901) was an officer in the Lancashire Constabulary for five decades and is known for both his tenacious criminal investigations and his setting up of a soup kitchen in Manchester. At the foot of the title page is the author's "Entered at Stationer's Hall" purple ink stamp.
