First edition of this detailed discussion of the complex and intertwining legal structures produced by treaty extra-territoriality clauses, the transition from imperial to republican rule, and the decisions of the Chinese Supreme Court.The Shanghai Municipal Council and the International Mixed Court gradually evolved from institutions established in the wake of the First Opium War. Captain Kotenev (1882-1951) arrived in China in 1901 from his native Russia and spent the next five decades in the country, serving with distinction in a variety of military roles and supporting the work of the Shanghai Municipal Council. After the Second World War, he became an advisor to the Kuomintang government of Shandong. Following Mao's victory in the civil war, he was tainted by association with the old regime and died in prison.
