Art Nouveau Bookplate by German artist MELCHIOR LECHTER 1896 3.5x5" Melchior Lechter (1865 Münster - 1937 Raron, Switzerland). Important German painter and precursor of the Jugendstil movement in Germany. After completing an apprenticeship in glass painting in Münster, Lechter began studying at the Academy of Art in Berlin. In 1895, and whilst there, he met the author Stefan George whose works he illustrated from 1897 until 1907. His painting style was greatly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and in his book illustrations, by William Morris. He went on to develop his own style of surface division and exquisite script style working for the Georg Bondi publishing company . Beside his work as an illustrator and designer, Melchior Lechter received assignments for a series of larger works, including the design of the Pallenberg Hall in the Commercial Art Museum in Cologne, for which he was honoured with a Grand Prix at the World's Fair in Paris in 1900. In 1907 he received a commission for a glass painting for the new building of the museum at the Domplatz in Münster and on the occasion of its dedication his work was exhibited together for the first time.
