The map extends from Russia and Mongolia in the north to New Holland (Australia) in the south, from the Mariana Islands in the east to the eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea in the west.Guillaume de L'Isle (1675-1726) was one of the foremost French cartographers after Sanson, responsible for a drive towards greater accuracy in maps. He was a disciple of Cassini and was elected to the Académie Royale des Sciences in 1702, which gave him access to the up-to-date information needed for his work. He produced groundbreaking maps of North America, corrected the longitude given to the Mediterranean Sea from 62 to 42 degrees, and was made chief geographer to King Louis XV in 1718.Provenance: Stephen C.
