Jane Barston 1719-1746. First edition, limited issue, unnumbered from an edition of 250, dedication copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Siegfried Sassoon from Edith Sitwell" and signed by her on the limitation page. Sassoon and Sitwell began corresponding in 1917, after Sitwell wrote to him in sympathy with his anti-war stance, and they became close friends.In December 1930, during a disagreement, Sitwell wrote to Sassoon, "I am told that you are feeling terribly hurt with me, and that you believe that I didn't appreciate or understand your friendship … You were one of my most intimate friends, and I have missed you more than I can say" (Letters p. 116). This poem was published less than a year later.
