SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE ILLUSTRIOUS G. WASHINGTON. A scarce contemporary engraving mourning the death of George Washington. Two women and a man stand mourning beside an obelisk, decorated with Washington's portrait, below at the base "G. Washington / There is / Rest in / Heaven." A willow tree stands to the right and above the obelisk, while a woman at the far left points to the sky and stands with a large anchor. This is the second state, with a thicker outer black morning border and a shadow across the obelisk, among other differences.The engraver, Thomas Clarke, was active for only a few short years. His earliest engravings appeared in the American Universal Magazine in 1797, and by 1801 he had fallen ill. Copies of this print are rare, with OCLC noting only the Boston Athenaeum, APS, AAS, and Huntington. We also locate copies at the MFA Houston, MFA Boston, and the National Gallery of Art.
