Etching of Robert Bridges. Final state of the portrait in which "Strang... considers me a cross between Moses and an old lion" (Bridges, p. 328). The portrait was done in 1898 and Binyon notes there were 70 proofs. Copies of this etching are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery (D1099), and the National Galleries of Scotland (P2333.498).The Scottish painter and printmaker, William Strang (1859-1921) studied at the Slade School of Art, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892 to 1922 (with a posthumous entry). He was elected ARA in 1906 (as an engraver), and RA in 1921. He worked, primarily, on etchings which include landscapes, pastoral themes and macabre genre subjects. He also etched 150 portraits of leading artistic and literary figures, including Kipling, Shaw, and Hardy. His son gave a significant collection of his father's work to the National Gallery of Scotland in 1955. There was a major exhibition of Strang's work at the National Portrait Gallery in 1981.
