First edition in book form of these six articles, together with a 13-page preface written by Bagehot for this edition. Across these papers, Bagehot argues strongly that Europe should move as close to a single currency as would be possible in the mid-19th century: "I fear the attempt to found a universal money is not possible now; I think it would fail because of its size. But I believe we could get as far as two moneys, two leading commercial currencies, which nations could one by one join as they chose, and which, in after time, might be combined" (p. 13).
