Diary Notes of a Visit to Walt Whitman and some of his Friends, in 1890. First edition of Dr John Johnston's account of his visit to America to meet Walt Whitman, including 11 half-tone photographs and a facsimile letter by Whitman. Johnston initially printed his notes in a pamphlet for private circulation among friends. Upon receiving a copy, Whitman expressed his approval of Johnston's writing.Johnston (1852-1927) was a Scottish physician and photographer who co-founded the Whitman appreciation group "Bolton College", also known as the "Eagle Street College", with the architect James W. Wallace. The two men separately visited the poet and later published a joint memoir of their encounters in Visits to Walt Whitman in 1890-1891 by Two Lancashire Friends (1917).
