Women and Work. First edition. Williams (1897-1983) was an economist who researched labour supply, industrial relations, and women in the workplace. Women and Work argues for women's continuing role in the workplace following the Second World War. It was part of the publisher's "New Democracy" series, which aimed to create "a body of informed opinion as a basis of social action" (p. 2).Williams's arguments are illustrated with "pictorial charts", which were novel at the time, and are now better known as infographics. They vividly portray the landscape of women's employment at the time of publication; for example, Chart V illustrates the gender divide in wages and Chart VI shows regional differences in rates of female employment. The book was well reviewed in The Woman Engineer: "It is only through widespread and intelligent discussion fostered by books such as this that the general attitude to women and work can be changed" (p. 80).
