Hot Discography. From the collection of Rolling Stones drummer and jazz aficionado Charlie Watts, with his posthumous bookplate: a fondly and solicitously preserved copy with a poignant history; extensively autographed by some of the leading lights of the Ellington and Basie organizations, headed by both Duke and the Count, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Harry Carney, Sonny Greer, Laurence Brown, Jimmy Blanton, Jo Jones, and Jimmy Rushing. Additionally signed on a slip mounted on the front free endpaper verso by Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges, Wallace Jones, Joe "Tricky Sam" Nanton, Juan Tizol, Rex Stewart, and Barney Bigard; and aside from those already named by Rex Stewart, Billy Taylor, Freddie Green, Otto Hardwicke, Ray Bauduc, Bob Haggert, Billy Butterfield, Nappy Lamare, Joe Sullivan, Jack Teagarden, Gene Cedric and Benny Carter (both on inserted slips), and Dicky Wells. The owner of this copy was William Lawson "Bud" O'Donnell (b. 1921), a native of Brookline, Massachusetts. Both the Ellington and Basie bands visited nearby Boston in the late '30s, Basie playing an extended residency at the Hotel Ritz-Carlton in August 1937 and Duke a week long engagement at the Metropolitan Theatre in mid-October of the same year; we believe it is likely that the autographs were garnered on these occasions.
