First edition of the second volume of Sondheim's collected lyrics, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Barry Humphries opposite the title page, in black ink: "To Barry - with love (really) - Steve".The early stage career of Barry Humphries (1934-2023) included the original production of Lionel Bart's Oliver. With his career largely dominated by Dame Edna Everage, Humphries did not appear in any Sondheim musicals, although Dame Edna was a performer in Children and Art, a single evening's entertainment at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre on 21 March 2005 to celebrate Sondheim's 75th birthday. On that occasion Dame Edna gave a rendition of "Losing My Mind" (from Follies).Humphries's Farewell Tour, included dates at Her Majesty's Theatre, Melbourne, in July 2012. One of the next shows to be presented at the theatre was a revival of Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (opening on 27 October 2012). There are two (complimentary) tickets for a performance on 23 November 2012 at 8 pm loosely inserted. Also present is a single ticket for One Afternoon With Stephen Sondheim at the theatre on the same date at 2 pm. It is likely that Humphries was given this present volume on that occasion.
