SON OF DRUMMER — a Drummer special publication, copyright 1978 by Alternate Publishing, 1730 Divisadero Street, San Francisco. Cover price $4.95. Sixteen colour pages. Cover by David Warner. ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE, p. 14: “The Robert Mapplethorpe Gallery,” described on the contents page as exclusive photographs from the New York photographer. 1978 is the year of Mapplethorpe’s X Portfolio — thirteen photographs made in collaboration with figures from New York’s leather and S&M communities, issued in an edition of 25 plus artist’s proofs by Harry Lunn, Robert Miller and Robert Self, and now jointly held by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Trust. The X Portfolio opened the tripartite structure of Mapplethorpe’s mature work. His leather photography appearing in a newsstand magazine in the same year, rather than a gallery portfolio, is an uncommon crossover between the leather press and the fine-art photography record. TOM OF FINLAND CENTERFOLD, p. 32: The contents page describes this as an original Tom poster, issued as a removable centerfold. [STATE ONE] The Tom of Finland centerfold poster is present, complete and unremoved; staples original and undisturbed. / The Tom of Finland centerfold has been removed. — This is the first thing any buyer will ask. State it plainly and photograph the spread open. FURTHER CONTENTS: Facing the contents page, a full-page drawing by HARRY BUSH titled “Learning the Ropes,” signed in the plate. p. 4 and p. 60, colour photo
