Maurois was an interpreter for Winston Churchill during the First World War and, with the outbreak of the Second World War, was appointed the French Official Observer attached to the British General Headquarters. He went on to write Why France Fell (1941).Fatapoufs & Thinifers, which concerns the fantastical world of two countries on the brink of war, is strikingly illustrated by Jean Bruller, who joined the Resistance during the Second World War and published under the pseudonym Vercors.
