A collection of five books presented to Raymond Briggs. Presentation copies, each inscribed by the author to Raymond Briggs. The assemblage comprises first editions of The Swan, The Story of a Soldier and Harry's War, first Dutch edition of En ik dan, and the first Red Fox edition of Don't Forget Me, together with an autographed letter loosely inserted, thanking Briggs for a Christmas gift, and making plans to meet.Virginia Mayo graduated from Brighton Art College in 1979, where she was likely taught by Briggs, who worked there from 1961 to 1986.The posthumous book label of Briggs (1934-2022), illustrator, graphic novelist, cartoonist, and author, is on the front pastedown of each book. The winner of numerous awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal (twice), the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and the Kurt Maschler Award, Briggs noted that "the whole point of illustration is that it is literary. If it is not, it remains a drawing only... Something must be 'going on' in the illustration" (Horne, p. 124).
