Malham's Naval Gazeteer is an alphabetical nautical encyclopaedia, offering alphabetical entries on global ports, coastal geography, navigation details, and trade routes, intended for sailors, naval officers, and merchants. Apart from the World map, the charts include North America (2), South America, the West Indies, Africa (2), Indian Ocean (including Oman), India, the Mediterranean, and a variety of European charts (Biscay, Baltic Sea, North Sea, English Channel, etc). Malham (1747–1821), was born in Craven, Yorkshire. In September 1790 he was residing at the Square, Plymouth Dock, in the capacity of 'teacher of navigation and the classics.' This edition appears particularly scarce with ESTC only recording an odd volume at Trinity College, Hartford. The work was first published in 1795 (23 copies, 7 in the UK), with further editions in 1796 (3 copies), and 1798 (2 copies), An American edition was published in Boston in 1797 with the maps re-engraved. Published on the eve of the Napoleonic Wars, this would have been a very useful publication. 2 vols, 8vo, xlvi, 536, [2]; 552 pp, large folding engraved map of the world (tear to fold at inner edge) and 16 folding engraved maps and charts by S. I. Neele, occasional light foxing but generally very clean, contemporary tree calf, rubbed, with wear to head of spines, a very good set.
