The Roosevelt I Knew. First edition, second printing, presentation copy to her fellow Roosevelt supporter, "For Bernard Ryan For recollection of his long support for progress through the Democratic Party, Frances Perkins. Dec 1946". Ryan (1891-1976), a delegate to the 1928 and 1932 Democratic conventions and an early supporter of Roosevelt, was appointed by him in 1930 as a judge of the New York State Court of Claims.Perkins, appointed by Roosevelt as Secretary of Labor (becoming the first female Cabinet member), administered enduring New Deal achievements including Social Security. Her book charts their decades-long friendship and offers a favourable portrait of Roosevelt's character, leadership, and commitment to social reform.Loosely inserted is a handwritten sheet in which Ryan corrects Perkins's recollections of the 1928 State Democratic Convention that nominated Roosevelt for New York Governor - "Miss Perkins' memory is playing her tricks" - as well as two unused postcards of Warm Springs, Georgia, where Roosevelt died.The second printing was published the same month as the first.
